The Spanish Ministry of Infrastructures (MIFO) has awarded the Alcatel & Dimetronic consortium the ERTMS for the Suburban Lines in Madrid at a total value of £ 47.9m with Dimetronic component amounting to £ 24.7m. The project is included in a series of actuations from MIFO to improve the commuter lines in Madrid. The scope of the project includes the signalling with ERTMS of the most utilised lines, C1, C3, C4, C7 and C8, and also of a new tunnel between Chamartin and Atocha stations. The installation of the new ERTMS system will improve the safety and the performance in the train traffic.
The ERTMS deployment includes the ERTMS Level 1 installation in lines C1, C7 and C8 in the north part of Madrid (Dimetronic scope) and also Level 1for the lines C3 and C4 in the south part of Madrid railway network (Alcatel scope). It is also planned to install both ERTMS level 1 and level 2 in the new tunnel between Atocha and Chamartin stations.
This project will be the first in Spain where ERTMS has been installed on High Speed conventional lines.
